There was a close call leading up to Christmas that posed a threat to the holiday cheer and magic surrounding the big event. On the Friday before Christmas, Nina's school friend came over for a play date while her mother picked up some last minute things. I can't remember how the conversation started, but the friend said something to the extent that Santa wasn't real. Hmmm. Nina matter-of-factly refuted that Santa was real, but the girl persisted.
Two days before Christmas and this girl was trying to dispel Santa? The foundation of her belief was that her mother told her that there was no Santa and no tooth fairy. Well, I was not going to let this little heretic go unchallenged, and I told her that when I was small I saw Santa and my brother heard the reindeer on the roof. That shook her confidence in her mother's dogma and she conceded "Oops, my mistake".
